Case Studies - Palazzo, Las Vegas
The Palazzo resort is truly an example of grandeur along the famed Vegas Strip. The Italian themed resort contains a 100,000-square-foot casino, restaurants and retail shops estimated at $1.8 billion. The Palazzo is the first new resort hotel to open on the Vegas Strip in three years.
Taylor International, the construction manager for the Palazzo, believed that due to the size of this project, it was too large for one contractor so they distributed the project to various subcontractors in 6 bid packages. Ultimately, Standard Drywall Inc. was awarded two of these bid packages.
First, the Back of House package, approximately $16 Million, consisted of all life safety areas like stairwell, corridors and HVAC shaft enclosures. This package presented a variety of logistical challenges, including daily attention and organization to coordinate with the Mechanical, Electrical, and safety contractors.
Second, Standard Drywall Inc. was awarded the Casino Exterior package, approximately $26 million. This design build package required coordination with the architect, stone contractor and SDI's engineering sub-contractors in order to maintain the structural integrity while incorporating the Italian design that the architect envisioned for the project. An aggressive construction schedule for the Palazzo created additional pressures for all of the contractors on the project.
The Palazzo opened on December 28, 2007 and is now recognized as the new diamond of the Las Vegas Strip. SDI provided services that allowed for increased coordination in the pre-construction phase thereby eliminating many of the conflicts that can occur on a typical job site.
