Description:

The Interactive Learning Pavilion (ILP) is a cutting-edge academic facility designed to support UCSB’s growing enrollment and collaborative, student-centered learning. The multi-story building provides more than 2,000 classroom seats across tiered lecture halls, active-learning classrooms, discussion rooms, and flexible collaboration spaces serving students across disciplines. Open-air circulation, vertical glazing, and high-performance exterior systems leverage Santa Barbara’s coastal climate, strengthening connections between indoor and outdoor learning environments.

As part of a joint venture, SDI supported the project through early collaboration, preconstruction, and BIM coordination, delivering complex interior and exterior assemblies across four levels of instructional space. Precision layout and disciplined coordination were essential to integrating curved architectural elements, dense building systems, and stringent acoustic and life-safety requirements within high-occupancy teaching environments. The all-electric facility targets LEED Gold certification and has received national recognition, including U.S. Building of the Year by World-Architects, underscoring its role as a model for next-generation higher-education design.
